October 11, 2023: Israel pounds Gaza by air, How an Israeli kibbutz ‘paradise’ turned into hell in Hamas attack, and more

1. Israel bombed Gaza overnight ahead of a potential ground assault against Hamas while U.S. President Joe Biden condemned the Palestinian militant group’s surprise attack as “sheer evil” and issued a¬†warning¬†seemingly aimed at its Iranian backers.

2. Just a few days ago this was the sleepy, scenic kibbutz of Kfar Aza, an Israeli farming community of about 750 people, many of them families with young children. Now it’s become a charnel house after Hamas gunmen burst out of the Gaza Strip on Saturday and laid waste to the village.

3. Israeli shelling hit southern Lebanese towns on Wednesday in response to a fresh rocket attack by powerful armed group Hezbollah, as cross-border violence extended into a fourth day.

4. Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives will try to unite around a new speaker to lead their fractious and narrow majority on Wednesday, a week after a small group of dissidents ousted Kevin McCarthy.

5. Caroline Ellison, the former co-head of Sam Bankman-Fried’s hedge fund and a pivotal witness in his trial on fraud charges tied to the collapse of his FTX cryptocurrency exchange, is scheduled to retake the stand on Wednesday morning.
